Brain Research: Positive Attitude Improves Performance

Recent neuroimaging research has confirmed negative social-emotional responses interfere with developing positive thoughts, feelings and high cognitive performance. [link below to video] I realize many of you who are regular visitors are saying, "Like duh dude, everyone knows what you think is what you get."

Yet, why do so many people struggle with being more positive about life and why are so many people taking drugs for anxiety, depression and a variety of emotional/behavioral disorders? Academics, psychologists and scientists have continued to believe, profess and attack the positive attitude community as nothing but some pseudo-science with only anecdotal evidence and no definitive research. 



Neuroimaging Research Provides Proof

Up until just a few years ago, even the neuro-scientists believed the brain to be a static organ and could not generate new brain cells. It is now a fact the brain does continue to regenerate new brain cells throughout life. This is proven with neuroplasticity, which explores how, and in which ways the brain changes throughout life. This ongoing growth of new neural pathways and synapses, confirms, no matter the age, if we change the way we think, the brain can change it's structure, become more flexible and improve brain functions for better memory, attention, speed, and problem solving. If this were not so, then how is it possible for a twenty-something to grow and develop into a mature fifty-something?


Throughout the generations there have always been smart, highly observant people who have learned, practiced and utilized disciplined thinking skills to achieve their personal and professional ambitions. Napoleon Hill, author of Think And Grow Rich, not only learned, but dedicated his life to inspiring others to understand "Whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve."

It has now been confirmed through neuro-research that thinking is an active process versus just being a passive reaction to environmental stimulus or emotions. Research is finding that simple social-emotional training to develop skills such as patience, calmness, cooperation and kindness should now be considered as skills to be developed. Simple social etiquette actually works for helping others to integrate into a social group. Just doing what one feels like doing, saying or commenting does not work. 

Brain training is not just for gurus, hippies saying "Ommmm" and monks sitting on a hilltop. If you truly want to change your life, change the way you think by changing your current state of mind, so you are able to think about new things and new possibilities.

Of course, this can sound like another "like duh, dude", but the reality is many people believe they don't have any control over personal traits, emotions and behaviors. They often exclaim and explain away an unacceptable behavior of theirs by saying, "Hey dude, this is just the way I am! My parents, teachers, others made me this way. It's not my fault I'm this way."


Choose To Become A Skillful Thinker

Brain image research is proving when people successfully become skillful thinkers, it changes the structure and function of the brain and the results are better than using drugs. This is powerful research for education, childhood development and, yes, teaching old dogs new tricks! 

Practicing and developing thinking skills has the potential for becoming the holy grail of mental mastery Boomers have pursued throughout their lives. I have multiple generations of dementia in my family, so I am motivated to find a way to break the cycle. 

For some forty years, I have believed in the untapped potential within every human. Even at a young age, it just made sense for me to think more positive thoughts than negative thoughts. As a result, I often sensed and experienced life very differently from others. Let's just say that when I shared my different thinking, others were not kind in letting me know how stupid or unrealistic I sounded. While I never wavered from my beliefs in positive thinking, it is nice to now have scientific proof that positive thinking works to help people live happier, more productive and meaningful lives.

People who focus on developing their abilities to restrain negative emotional/behavioral responses, stop blaming others and choose to think differently (develop more positive thinking) their brain will actually begin to change in ways that improve cognitive performance. With improved cognitive performance, people find they have better decision making abilities and make better choices. Life gets better. Old, even lifetime behaviors, habits and addictions can be changed. Not just masked for brief periods of time, but literally replaced with new, different and life enriching thoughts.

Enriching, inspiring thoughts lead to inspired actions and inspiring results.

When one is effective at regulating their emotions and developing good emotional regulation skills, it is good for the brain, good for the body and lowers levels of stress. It takes practice, practice, practice. But you can even train your brain to enjoy the practice. In fact, the body will shift and change to support the new you. And why stop there. Decide to be happy, enjoy your job, love your spouse and children and love life, no matter your past or present and no matter the uncertainty of the future.
